India - US, the biggest difference......Respect

Hey people

I do not want to haggle on about the recently concluded US elections and how Obama won etc....

I just want to make a small observation and I am sure some of you will agree with me.... I was impressed with the speeches of McCain and Obama after the election results were out, more so with McCain.... The sheer calmness with which he stated that,"till yesterday Barack and me were contesting in an election - today he is my president along with the rest of the country and therefore I will do my best to support him in all endeavours that he might undertake....." Awesome!!!! Compare it with the Indian elections circa 2004; L K Advani on losing the election remarked,"Let us see how long this government lasts....... etc etc..."

Call me an America lover or whatever, but I believe that if there is anything that we as a nation need to learn from the US society, it is respect for the fellow human being..... It hurts me greatly to admit that in spite of harping about the greatness of Indian culture etc etc., we have failed to achieve the single most important characteristic of a civilization - respect for the individual....

Now a lot of opponents might say that the show of respect in the US society is just a farce...Well so be it...at least they maintain it effectively... In our country, we are not even accustomed to use simple words like Thank you or Sorry.... We tend to think arrogance is our birthright and we always have it....

When was the last time I stood on a decent queue, I do not remember......

Leave you to ponder on it....

Here's saluting respect for each and every one of us......

Eminence

Well said. I totally agree with you. Indian politicians need to learn basic things- how to behave in public.
